Whisker stress - what can I do?

If you suspect that your cat is suffering from whisker stress and there are no more serious medical causes as described in 'Signs that your cat is already suffering from significant whisker stress', you should take a closer look at your cat's food and water bowls and the length of her whiskers. The same applies, of course, if you want to avoid whisker stress in general. The following questions need to be answered:

1. How long are your cat's whiskers?
2. What is the inner diameter of your drinking and food bowls?
3. How high is the inner rim/side wall of your food bowl?
4. How steep is the inner rim/side wall of your food bowl?
   

The whisker length of your cat and the inner diameter of your food and water bowl are of course related to each other. For whiskers up to 7 cm long, the inner diameter should be at least 16 cm, for whiskers between 7 and 9 cm long, the inner diameter should be at least 18 cm, and for whiskers over 9 cm long, the inner diameter should be at least 20 cm. Cats are less sensitive when the fine tactile hairs are touched at the ends , so the risk of over-stimulation is significantly lower in larger bowls.

The inner rim of your food bowl should not be higher than 2.5 cm. And it shouldn't be steep or even vertical either, because then the whiskers will be poorly ‘deflected’.

With drinking bowls, things are a little different. Here, only the inner diameter matters, as the bowl can be filled almost completely. So the inner rim is irrelevant. The overall height should not exceed approximately 6 cm.

When it comes to food bowls, the lower the overall height, the better. Unless otherwise indicated for medical reasons.

Based on these considerations, you can assess whether your food and/or water bowl is suitable for your cat or whether you should replace it/both.
