Cats and the colour white

The colour that cats don't like so much

Now, whether cats truly hate a particular colour is unknown. What we do know, however, is that your cat's colour vision spans the ultraviolet spectrum. And, more light can reach her retina, which is why she has such excellent night vision. However, the combination of these two factors causes her to see the colour white as if it were glowing – like under a black light.

This is why white is likely to be at least disturbing for most cats. In addition, artificial brighteners are often added to make the white appear even brighter to us humans. However, these brighteners further enhance the UV effect – the glow. A bright white lab coat will certainly not calm your cat.

The glow of a white transport box will only increase your cat's anxiety when travelling to the vet. And a white food bowl is definitely not an invitation to a pleasant eating experience for your cat.

As a rule of thumb, if you want to do your cat a favour, avoid white – at least bright white – wherever you can.

The Premium Silicone Placemats and Drinking Bowls for Cats by Albanine & Knuffl® are deliberately kept colourless. And the Cat Plates for Cats by Albanine & Knuffl® are only available in dark blue (Moonlit Atlantic) and in the absolutely cat-friendly colours of our 'Easter Colour Palette'.
