The answer to this question can only be: Large! Where by ‘large’ we mean a large inner diameter and the largest possible volume. However, the side wall should not be too high either.

Unlike other suppliers, we at Albanine & Knuffl® are of the opinion that neither a diameter of 15 cm or even just 13 cm nor a volume of 300 ml is sufficient.

We are convinced that a good drinking bowl must also take your cat's whisker length into account. This is because whisker stress, which is extremely unpleasant for your cat, should also be avoided at all costs when drinking! As a general rule, a smaller cat with long whiskers needs a larger drinking bowl than a larger cat with short whiskers.

A compromise must be found. An inner diameter that matches the length of your cat's whiskers, the largest possible volume as a freshness-keeping function and an overall height that is still acceptable from the cat's point of view. Our Trinkschalen für Katzen (Drinking Bowls for Cats) are available in various sizes accordingly.

For our size advice, we divide the whisker length - meaning the length of the longest individual whisker of your cat - into three ranges: up to approx. 7 cm, between approx. 7 cm and approx. 9 cm and over approx. 9 cm. We offer the right drinking bowl size for each range.

We at Albanine & Knuffl® think: No. Decades of experience, hundreds of tests with dozens of cats and exchanges with cat specialists and cat owners worldwide have led to the following realisation about drinking bowls: It should be large, it should be reasonably flat and, above all, it should be made of glass. In other words, transparent - that's what cats like when it comes to drinking. We can't tell you why. The best we can do is speculate. But we'll leave that to others. We'll content ourselves with the realisation that transparent is the first choice of most cats when it comes to the liquid wet.
